With Adam Driver attached to star, the film promised to be a powerful exploration of ideology and relationships with Cuba. However, Nichols candidly admitted that the project is now on hold.
"I love that film and I would really like to make it," he said. "It's hard to take a movie out in March of 2020. That was a rough year! I love it so much and David Grann's article that inspired it is so good. I'm loath to ever say movies are important, but it feels like something that’s important. Adam was going to star as William Morgan, and now that won’t happen."
Nichols' frustration is palpable, as he grapples with the challenges of bringing such a significant story to the screen. The delay raises questions about the feasibility of independent films in an industry dominated by blockbuster projects.
The Cormac McCarthy Adaptations
Nichols was also working on adapting two of Cormac McCarthy's books, The Passenger and Stella Maris, into a single screenplay. However, he revealed that New Regency, the production company involved, is unlikely to move forward with the project.
"Those two books would become one screenplay, which I’ve written, because the books are connected," he said. "But that was with New Regency and I don’t think they’ll be moving forward with that one. It’s a challenging story and it made for a challenging screenplay. Ultimately, they were looking for a more commercial story and I think I was a little too faithful to the books."
Nichols' struggle to secure funding for his ambitious projects highlights the delicate balance between artistic vision and commercial viability in the film industry.
King Snake: A Return to Form
Despite the setbacks, Nichols remains optimistic and is currently working on King Snake, a gothic horror film that marks a return to his original creative roots.
"It’s really exciting in that it’s something that’s cut from whole creative cloth and completely out of my mind — and sometimes I feel a little out of my mind," he said. "I really go for it in this one, and I’m really excited to see how it plays."
