Former Pretenders guitarist Robbie McIntosh reflects on his time with the band, particularly his early days and the unique dynamics of playing alongside frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. In a recent interview with Guitar World, McIntosh reveals the audition process that led him to join the band in 1982, following the tragic death of founding member James Honeyman-Scott.
McIntosh's audition was a jam session with another guitarist, Mick Green, and a bass player whose name he couldn't recall. Martin Chambers was on drums, and Chrissie Hynde and Dave Hill, the manager, were in the front row. Despite being friends with Honeyman-Scott, this was McIntosh's first meeting with Hynde.
"I played for maybe 20 minutes with another guitar player, Mick Green, who I was sort of in awe of, and a bass player whose name I can’t remember. Martin [Chambers] was playing drums. Chrissie and Dave Hill, the manager, sat in front of the stage," he explains.
The first rehearsal with Hynde stood out for McIntosh. "I remember she played quite loud, but that didn’t worry me," he recalls. "I was more concerned with how I could complement her and play off what she did."
Their first song together was likely "Middle of the Road," which featured a challenging lead guitar solo. McIntosh describes piecing together the solo through multiple takes in the studio, with producer Chris Thomas favoring the first half. He incorporated a fast bit and a delay effect at the end, which Thomas appreciated.
Comparing his approach to Honeyman-Scott's playing, McIntosh notes a difference in style. "It was a bit more aggressive and flashy," he says. "People always ask me about the picking on that solo. I just used my fingers, and the pick was inside my hand. Then if I needed the pick, I’d just pull it out."
Chris Thomas's positive feedback on McIntosh's guitar playing has stuck with him. "Chris Thomas always complimented me on the guitar playing on the album. I saw him a couple of years ago and he said the same thing. He said what a great time he had making that album. I was quite chuffed," he adds.
McIntosh's experience with the Pretenders showcases the band's dynamic approach to music and the importance of individual creativity within a group setting. His collaboration with Hynde and the band's unique sound contributed to their success and enduring legacy in the music industry.
